With tomorrow being Memorial Day, I thought I'd post something I wrote a while back after coming back from working yet another funeral detail for another fallen veteran. Thank the vets around you, thank the ones who serve, for you never know when you won't get that chance again.
For those of you who've served, who know the price of Freedom, please accept my heartfelt thanks and gratitude.
So, without further ado, my little ramble about the often forgotten aspect of Memorial Day, the aftermath of the fallen:
"On behalf of the President of the United States and the people of a grateful nation I'd like to present this flag to you as a token of appreciation and gratitude for your loved one's faithful service."

I hate funeral details. I mean, really, truly hate them. It doesn't matter how many I do, they don't become easier. Between escorting my old boss to memorial ceremonies or working funeral details I've heard Taps played over 230 times, and each time it cuts me to the core. Really, though, that's the easy part, that's not the part that really kills me each and every time.
What gets me, what really kills me, is the flag.
You see, no matter how calm, how pleasant, how smiling and friendly the next of kin is before hand, no matter how much time they spend talking to you and shaking your hand, and thanking you for your service and coming out to honor their loved one, no matter all of that, the flag destroys them, all of them. It's like this small little nuclear bomb that obliterates all they had thought they'd known, all they'd thought their reality and world were.
Every time as we fold the flag, as I feel those folds beneath my fingers, feel that thick cloth in my hands, a little rough cotton cloth, and yet revered and almost holy for what it stands for and for the blood of those who've fought and died for it and consecrated it, every time I feel it coming. I know that I'm about to drop a bomb on their precious world.
As we complete the folds, and fight to make the last tuck tight and neat, to hide the blood red and pure white with the honored blue, I often hear a hitch in the breathing of the next of kin, an anticipatory intake of breath for what they know is coming.
I salute the flag, take it in my hands, feeling the weight of the flag, compact and tightly folded, a neat triangle, coming to what is about to become the messy end to a usually tidy ceremony. The Soldier salutes the flag I now hold and steps away. I wait a beat and half to allow him to clear the area as I turn to the family and approach the next of kin.
It's usually at this point I see the first tears from the next of kin. They're trying to hold it in, but I'm about to put an end to that facade. I bend at the waist, keeping my own personal feelings in check. If I even show a crack in my demeanor it will bring everything to a crashing, horrible halt.
